Thyme To Do Some Herbal Math

In many areas the few warm days of March have led to the awakening of our spreading perennial herbs. Their awakening is a sure sign that the sun is once again doing it's job and that is thyme to do ours.

Among the wonderful benefits of herbs is their ability to spread. And spread they do. Thyme , oregano, chives and of course mint are ready to make their move into other areas of the garden. This may be a good thing if the garden is new. However it is quite another in a garden of limited space migration thyme means crowding and overgrowing plants.

Early spring is thyme for dividing these multiplying scented beauties. Simply take a spade plunge it deep into clump of thyme lifting it from the ground. Now simply break or cut apart the clump into smaller pieces showing top growth and you have new plants to share, plant somewhere else or pot up and bring inside.

Division serves another benefit too. Dividing an old clump of herbs rejuvenates the planting. Older clumps often get woody in the centers and have nothing to show but usable growth at the outer edge. Not a pretty sight for sure.
